The Aappam – Tracing its roots

Inspired by India's affection with spices, dishes and culinary masterpieces – Aappa kadai's special offering to food lovers is the popular bowl shaped pancakes made from fermented rice batter and coconut milk, called Aappam. The origin of Aappam dates back to 1st Century AD when ancient people living in the coastal belts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka used to relish this delicacy.

The Aappam, is perhaps the only dish that was cooked in a number of ways and styles by different communities and countries. It was not only popular in south India but also had its influence on Burmese and Sri Lankan cuisines. It is a staple diet and a cultural synonym of the Syrian Christians of Kerala (India) who cook the Aappam in a very distinctive style.

To recreate the magical aromas and flavors of the Aappam from these eras was quite a task. The research team of Aappa kadai has unearthed several ancient and authentic recipes from these lands. This in-depth research gave the Founder and his team the confidence to dish out some of the world's best Aappams to their customers. Our Aappams are made and served exactly the way they are cooked in traditional homes!

Aappa kadai – Scripting a Success Story

Aappa kadai was launched in the year 2002 to introduce customers to the world of Aappams. With a clear focus to provide its customers the most authentic Indian flavors, Aappa kadai soon became a favorite not only with Indians but also with food lovers across all nationalities. The restaurant serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare from different cuisines like Chettinad, South Indian, Malabar, Tandoori, Chinese, North-Indian and Hyderabadi Biryani. No wonder this multi-cuisine restaurant, with four branches in Dubai and two in Chennai, India, has won a host of awards and accolades.

Almost a decade from its launch, Aappa kadai holds a strong patronage from food lovers. The reason for this tremendous success is its endeavour to serve delicious and authentic dishes to it's loyal customers. In the year 2009 Aappa kadai was re-named and registered as Aappa kadai.

The Cuisine

Aappa kadai has a great team of chefs. After having researched the art of Aappam making, the chefs have created their own signature Aappam dishes that are unique to the restaurant. The restaurant's expertise extends to Chettinad,Tandoori, North Indian & Chinese cuisines.

Chettinad - The chettiar community from south India loved their food spicy and pungent. Aappa kadai serves true Chettinad food to its patrons, as many of the Chefs are from Chettinad region.

Tandoori (Grilled) and North Indian - Aappa kadai specializes in making delicious tandoori dishes. The restaurant also serves desi North-Indian food prepared with exotic spices.

Chinese - The Chinese team at the restaurant know their art well. From lip-smacking noodles and dim sums to fried rice and Manchurian, they make it all!
